Learn Music

You Can Learn Music Perhaps you’ve gone to a concert and fantasized about being able to ‘shred’ on a guitar, like the lead guitarist you were listening to. Or maybe you were listening to some artist on the piano and you wished that you could play the piano like that. What usually holds the average person back is what I call the ‘myths’ that abound in and around music. They mostly exist around learning music, since anyone who has succeeded in mastering an instrument has learned the falsehood of these myths. One of the most prevalent myths is that you need to have ‘talent’ to play an instrument and, if you don’t, well, just forget about it. The other very prevalent myth is that you need great sacrifice and must spend years and many hours a day to learn an instrument. The third thing that really messes people up is tying into some really bad teaching ideas. What do I mean by this? Well, learning an instrument is really no different than learning any other sort of skill. I like to compare ...

The Book of Music Basics

The Book of Music Basics gives you just enough basics to succeed with whatever style of music you are learning. Use as a supplement to your lessons to ensure success in learning the instrument. The first part explains why music education has become something of a 'hit and miss' proposition in this country; the basics have generally fallen out or they are taught in a confusing order. There is a specific order to learn the basics otherwise they are apt to become confusing. This book gives full definitions with illustrations and examples. It tells you how to apply them for what you want to do. Available on Amazon as; Kindle  or Paperback

Balance In Learning

Balance In Learning There are basics to almost any field of endeavor. Let’s take a look at basketball, for example. I’m certainly no basketball player, so that makes me uniquely qualified to write about it. I am fairly certain that things such as dribbling, throwing a ball, catching it and being able to get a ball into the hoop (I do remember a thing called the ‘layup’) would all qualify as ‘basics’ in basketball. There are probably at least fifty or more other things that are basics that I’m unaware of, not being a pro basketball player, as I’ve said. I would guess that, when basketball players practice, they drill some of these basics, especially if they are newer to the game. Then, having all these basics under their belt, that is to say these basic skills have become more or less second nature, the players play the game, using each of the skills where needed with intention and focus now on playing and winning the game. What do you suppose the reaction would be ...

Is It Hard To Learn Music?

Is It Hard To Learn Music? Many people have gotten the idea that it is difficult to learn music. So often, after hearing a great performance, you hear someone remark that the person playing was 'lucky' because they had been born with talent. You hear people say that they could never do that because they have no talent. Society holds up the picture of the child prodigy who plays, presumably without ever having lessons. Musical groups are represented as a bunch of friends who just got together and became an overnight sensation. The truth is, everyone learned somewhere; the people in these musical groups had lessons and rehearsed and even Mozart took lessons from his dad. One thing that has made it seem hard to learn music to the average person is the 'snob nomenclature' that develops in activities such as music. Nomenclature is simply what things are called and 'snob nomenclature' occurs when people within a given study start using or making-up really technical...
